Constructive Summer by Hold Steady

From the starting jagged guitar riff, through the swelling of Franz Nicolay's anthemic piano, to the bizarre compressed lead work - reminiscent of something off a Loverboy album, the Hold Steady launch into Stay Positive with a solid addition to their signature sound.

I kind of think that this song was written for an album that would be released earlier than mid-summer, as the song carries the positivity of the band's message and also seems to be meant to sing for a summer tour. Maybe I'm too literal in this regard, it just seems to me to be a song for a particular time and place.

Sequestered In Memphis by Hold Steady

This may just be my favorite song on the album. Its clever, speaks to hard living and ridiculous circumstances and has that sing along quality that makes this such a great band to listen to and to see live.

Awesome pop hooks in this and a really excellent arrangement. This is one of those slight departures from earlier Hold Steady, in that this song, unlike many others is in the first person. Its not so much about the mythology of the twin cities, but a recounting of a bizarre event. It has a conversational tone, and some funny conventions...

"Yeah sure I'll tell my story again

Elephant Music For Street Climbers by The Cads

The first song we wrote as a group if I remember correctly.

Gary auditioned for us on this and the triple beat (bang bang bang)of the snare was what sealed the deal.

I Still Call Your Name by The Cads

This was my favorite Cads song. Its symbolic, angry, naive and idealistic. So many of the qualities that I experienced at that time.

I wrote it about a girl I smooched with when I was all of 13 or so. I still remember the smell of Silkience conditioner as I nuzzled into her long hair, still remember the feel and sound of our corduroys rubbing together.

I told her I was in love, she told me in very very certain terms "No you're not". It only made me love her more. Ah the wisdom of a 13 year old girl when the beast is at the gate.

Sky Was Screaming by The Cads

I wrote this song after staying up all night and wandering around Pittsford. I think Will may have been with me, maybe Matt too. We used to stay up and generally at around 3:00 or 4:00 would find ourselves out in front of Wegmans supermarket.

Sometimes we'd go in, wander the brightly lit aisles, buy something sugary or gooey.
