This scene was hugely important in the late 1970s, when the punk rock/new wave scene exploded. Centered around the CBGBs venue, bands such as Talking Heads, Ramones, Blondie, and Television were spawned. Always a major contributor, it has been cited as a major scene for recent indie rock music with such bands as Interpol, Asobi Seksu, We Are Scientists, The Essex Green, The Bravery, and The Strokes. It continues to be a haven for Noise music.
