Sky Was Screaming by The Cads
I wrote this song after staying up all night and wandering around Pittsford. I think Will may have been with me, maybe Matt too. We used to stay up and generally at around 3:00 or 4:00 would find ourselves out in front of Wegmans supermarket.
Sometimes we'd go in, wander the brightly lit aisles, buy something sugary or gooey.
I remember setting shopping carts rolling down the long parking lot towards Monroe Avenue. There weren't any cars there, so the carts cold roll and really gain some speed before hitting the grass or sometimes a lamp post or random object that would send them tumbling and crashing loudly to a stop.
So on one of those particular days, the sun was coming up. "The sky is screaming" I thought to myself and a song was born. So what's it about? Hope? Sex? Nature? Suicide?
Not sure I actually remember. What I do remember is being very pleased to work a Mae West reference into the first line of the song. I also liked the phrase "screaming about a revolution" - a reference to the world going round, and that being a far bigger occurrence than any social movement could ever be.
I also loved the very typical rock & roll chorus with the relative minor and the "hey la la la la's". I always wanted a bit more "pop" out of the Cads, and I think this may have been as close as we ever got.
